Tracing and Re-creating

Tue Mar 3, 2015, 7:41 PM
When I first discovered my love for drawing I definitely didn't had talent to make something good out of my mind, but I was always trying to do so through hours of drafts that every now and then produced results, however at some point I thought I would be capable of creating better compositions of my own if I could replicate something good that was made by someone else I admired, this was... not exactly truth, however over time it made me realize of many flaws I had and saved me some frustration.

Recently I began to replicate works again for one reason... color. I've never had the pulchritude and/or resources to make good art with traditional coloring techniques but when I started doing so digitally I loved making experiments (in the little to no time I could), but I was still limited by the little knowledge I had so once again I started to replicate works in order to "reverse engineer" a technique that would help me reproduce effects that I liked, It worked wonders for understanding purposes I tell you! but I still find it hard to apply in my own art.

Now after this long introduction I address the real topic for this  Journal : RECREATING IS NOT TRACING.

This article brought my attention on this issue:

No-Game-No-Life-Artist-Caught-Tracing Haruhichan.c by Shatterharts
Author of NGNL found tracing

Where basically says the author of "No Game / No Life" has Traced work from other people and transformed them into his own characters.

Whether this accusation is true or not is not really the point I want to bring but rather how even though some parts are specially similar, it is without a doubt different in composition and most of the shown pieces only partially resemble  the originals, in fact one of them only has the hands as a reference.

The few differences such as the interpretation between the Characters traits (height, Complexion, facial expressions, clothing, etc) already creates a new art, Art that is based of something for sure but it is not a copy paste of the original with some sprinkles to fool the eyes of casual watchers.

The value of re-creating is amazing for learning purposes and as long as it is not taken too far it can be good to assure your fidelity to a scene, however this is a practice that is not seen well when used in a professional environment mostly because the artists are being paid to make something and if the artwork is Traced then: why does the original author is not credited?.

This Issue drifts farther and farther from that point on, but is it really fair to consider Re-created work on the same level as doppelganger traces of other works?

I think not.
